Born on 30 July 1888 〔Who's Who2008: London, A & C Black ISBN 978-0-7136-8555-8〕 he was educated at Marlborough College and University College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1915,〔Crockford's Clerical Directory1940-41 Oxford, OUP,1941〕 after which he was Curate of St Mary, Newington.〔(British History on-line )〕 Later he was Vicar of Saint Mary-the-Virgin, Oxford 〔(Church website )〕 then a Canon at St Paul's Cathedral.
